Discover a Hub of Creativity and Excellence
Emmanuel College's Film Department stands out as a centre of creativity and academic excellence, offering an enriching experience for students from Year 7 through Year 12. Our program is designed to foster both technical skills and artistic vision, preparing students for a future in the dynamic field of film and media.
Award-Winning Excellence
Emmanuel College was honoured as the 2022 School of the Year at BUFTA, and we proudly secured the Runner-Up position in 2023. The BUFTA competition, organised by Bond University, attracts entries from talented young filmmakers around the world, making these accolades a testament to the exceptional quality of our students' work.
Our students have also excelled individually, with two consecutive wins for the Gold Coast Filmmaker of the Year, each earning a $5,000 prize for their exceptional work.
State-of-the-Art Equipment and Facilities
Students are equipped with industry-standard tools to bring their creative visions to life. Starting in Year 7, students learn the fundamentals of filmmaking using Canon DSLR cameras. As they advance, they gain access to cutting-edge equipment, including 6K Blackmagic cameras, ensuring they are well-versed in professional-grade technology by the time they reach their senior years. Students from Year 9 through to Year 12 are encouraged to use their creative skills for various projects and can book out the equipment and choose the location of their film projects.
Our students are also equipped with the latest industry-standard software, allowing students to develop their post-production skills and create polished, professional-quality films. Students can also choose to use their own devices for editing or have access to our iMac lab, providing flexibility and convenience in their creative process.
Engaging Curriculum and Hands-On Learning
Our film curriculum is designed to be both academically rigorous and creatively stimulating, contributing to students' ATAR scores. We emphasise a hands-on approach to learning, where students not only study film theory but also apply their knowledge through practical projects and assignments.
Our program is enriched with incursions from industry professionals, including special effects makeup artists, providing students with real-world insights and skills. Additionally, students participate in a variety of exciting excursions to film studios, festivals, and other industry-related events, broadening their understanding of the film industry.
Opportunities for Service and Connection
The Film Department offers numerous opportunities for students to serve and connect with the community. A Film Club is held every Friday afternoon, run by the Year 12 Film Captains, providing tutoring for students who wish to extend their skills.
Students also contribute to the community through their involvement in EC News, a school news program managed by the Film Department. Through EC News, students report on events around the school, gaining practical experience in journalism and media production. Follow us on Instagram at [ec_news](https://www.instagram.com/ec_n...).
Competitive Success and Industry Connections
Emmanuel College's Film Department has a strong track record in competitions, notably achieving success in the Queensland-based "Race Around the Ekka" competition. These opportunities allow students to showcase their talents and gain recognition for their hard work and creativity.
Our department maintains strong connections with the film industry, providing students with valuable networking opportunities and insights into potential career paths. These connections, combined with our comprehensive curriculum and state-of-the-art facilities, make Emmanuel College an ideal place for aspiring filmmakers.
